With the Holiday Season moving into full swing, everyone is going to be interested in eating more desserts and treats. That’s to be expected.
Chocolate is one of my favorites. Any type of chocolate cookie cut in the shape of a diamond gives you ‘chocolate diamonds’.
Love my chocolate. Good chocolate is rich with antioxidants too. There is a special hot chocolate blend that I used to get at whole foods market. It was some of the richest chocolate you could ever imagine. mmmm….
I still can’t resist chocolate – at least not for very long.
This brings us to a question about eating lots of sugary sweet candy, cookies, muffins, cakes and pies for the holidays. How do we protect our teeth.
1. Rinse your mouth with water after eating a delicious treat. Sticky stuff tends to, um… stick. Rinse your mouth immediately with water to get sticky stuff off in bulk chunks. That will reduce the area of your teeth exposed and it will also reduce the amount of food for the bacteria that causes both cavities and gum disease.
2. Brush your teeth as soon as you can. Gently. No need to brush hard or absent mindedly. You could damage your gums that way. Long term abuse can lead to recession even if you don’t have gum disease.
3. Consider increasing the amount of times you floss per day. Since you have increased the amount of sugary sweets you are eating, (automatically as part of the Holiday Season – not your fault or mine), floss more to compensate a bit.
4. Eat hard cheese to help harden your enamel, and / or use a fluoride rinse to help reharden the enamel on your teeth.
5. Use a Hydro Floss. There is nothing like huge streams of water to blast away the sticky stuff.
6. Use an oxygenated mouthwash. Oxygen can help to eliminate the anaerobic bacteria that cause gum disease – the same type of bacteria that can also cause cavities.
There are some quick tips to help you enjoy your chocolate diamonds and other sweet snacks during the holiday season without worrying about what might happen to your teeth and gums!
