Comment on Important VISION Question Improvement? by your optometrist

Diane

Vision improvement is common. There are many factors involved including diet, lifestyle, habits, stress, etc. etc. etc.
I once saw a patient who improved his nearsightedness from -4.00 to -1.50. His last eye exam had been 3 years previous to this one. He said the only thing he changed is that he and his wife had become vegetarians. Many people have vision improvement when they quit working at jobs in which they were working at a computer for 8+ hours per day. Many people go nearsighted from the use of computers and reading when it is done for the majority of their day. When they are no longer straining their eyes the vision improves. Many people over 40 experience improved myopia (nearsightedness) once they begin wearing bifocals because the bifocal lens relaxes the eye when reading and allows it to go back to its original shape. The eye muscles are no longer being pulled and strained which elongates the eye. On the contrary, people who go to medical school, law school or doctorate programs in which hours and hours of study are required are more likely to go nearsighted than someone who works in sales or a career in which not as much near work is required.
To recreate this effect for yourself I recommend you engage in a vision improvement program, either on your own or under the direction of a behavioral optometrist who specializes in vision therapy.
To find a doctor
-1.75 is not a very high prescription. You will do well with a vision improvement program if you are willing to do what it takes to reach your goals.

Eugene

The length of the eye is not the only factor in eye prescription. Refractive error is a result of the mismatch between the various refractive components of the eye including front and back curve of cornea, corneal thickness, front and back curve of lens, lens thickness, lens density, anterior chamber depth and posterior chamber length.

It is highly unlikely that your friend had a change in eye length, but she well may have had a change in corneal curvature, lens density or lens shape. These changes occur naturally, especially in the lens which continues to grow throughtout life.

You cannot make these kinds of changes happen in yourself.

Catherine

Sounds very odd. Can't explain it all. I hope one of the qualified optoms on here will answer it.

But the older lady, yes that makes sense, although it doesn't usually happen until after 40. It's normal then for nearsighted eyes to "improve". After 40 people tend to become more farsighted.

Keith

I'm this way, too, and have been since I was 10 years old. That was almost 40 years ago. The condition itself can't be reversed due to the curvature of the eyeball but you can improve your vision through laser surgery. One of the few advantages I have found from being nearsighted is that I have not developed the farsightedness associated with getting older. I can still see well close up without reading glasses.

Laurie

Donni is wrong, it is not new at all actually. Get your facts straight, but I do agree lazik is definitely bad. Check out the resources of my post for a free book center of old books about the Bates Method. Check it out, and no I am not trying to recieve the best answer.

The Bates Method has been around since I think 1919... That isn't "new". It has helped many.

Lori

I just had it done on friday (2 days ago), i went back in for my day after exam about 18 hours after surgery, and my vision was already 20/15. I would definitely recommend it. I was very nervous at first, but it's been better than expected thus far. The only "complaint", is that my eyes were sore for about the first hour to 2 hours and it made it difficult for me to take a nap as they recommended. If i had to do it again, i would have taken some nyquil as soon as it was over so i would have slept.

Also, my mother, uncle, and at least 4 of my friends (that i know for sure) have had it done and none have had any problems. If you really research it, there has never been a documented case of anyone going blind in the USA from Lasik. Yes there have been people who have had their vision become worse or have had major complications, but many of these problems were when lasik was first approved in the US and there were many unqualified surgeons who were not screening or properly treating patients (you remember all the $399 an eye ads back in the day). Statistics show 92-98% of patients are happy with Lasik. Just make sure you go to a qualified surgeon. If you cant afford it ($2800- $4000) than stick with glasses, contact use actual has a much higher rate of eye infections and problems than LASIK

Jack

Well I would wait on Lasik Surgery. There have been some medical problems associated with them. I can not give you any specifics its just one of those things you read about once and don't pay a lot of attention to. Though I wear glasses also I was not planning on having the surgery. I did have a friend who had this surgery and was very satisified with the result. He was 56 or 57 years old when he had it done. Infection is always a possible problem with contacts you are correct on this one. I am sorry that I really do not have a great solution to your problem. I am not familiar with the program that you are refering to. By this I mean Natural Vision Improvement. I have heard of this sort of thing. I think you may be refering to eye exercise. It would not hurt to speak with an Opthomoligist about this or go on Web MD and ask your question there. For now all that I can suggest is try and find the most comfortable glasses that you can find and when you take them off try and remember to always put them in the same place when not wearing them and if not at home put them in a place where you have a similiar association with. Like always on a table. Good Luck Bob

Try the natural vision improvement. If it doesn't work at least you've cancelled out a option.
