Who Says That Gum Disease Can Be Prevented with Regular Brushing and Flossing?….

Friday, May 1st, 2009

I had the misfortune to read another article this morning that said something like, “All that you need to do to prevent periodontal disease is to brush, floss and use mouthwash.” I cannot begin to tell you how foolish such a belief is.

Do you have any idea about how many people are suffering from gum disease and other dental problems right now? If brushing, flossing and using mouthwash were all that was needed, there would definitely not be so many people who have this problem.

If you have the unfortunate experience of spending any time in the office of a person who treats gum disease for a living, you will begin to realize just how big the professional industry of fighting gum disease really is. I used to believe that the industry existed because no one wanted to talk about or teach prevention. Now, I am beginning to think the problem is that no one is interested in implementing prevention for themselves.

Gum disease can cost a man his teeth. People spend tons of money, not just on gum disease treatments – they spend even more on regular dental care. But, the question now has to be answered – if the average person really does not care about this issue, why should I spend so much time working to help people who don’t want to be helped?

There are a number of forces that conspire to hide the facts from people, unintentionally, of course. For example. I love the story about a dentist, when confronted with a patient who has lost most of their teeth with the question, ‘Do I have gum disease?” The Dentist replies, “I don’t see any gum disease”.

Well, if you have professionals running around who aren’t sure why you lost your teeth, that is a real problem. I have a difficult time understanding such behavior. Perhaps he didn’t see any gum disease because there were no teeth left to lose?

Ultraclean Dental Floss

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Hi Dave,

I appreciate all of your information concerning dental care and am following many of your suggestions with excellent results.  I recently started to use a new type of dental floss.  it’s made by Johnson and Johnson and it’s called REACH Ultraclean.  It is far superior to any other type of floss and I’ve tried them all.  It has micro-grooves and is advertised to remove up to two times more plaque than regular floss.  It appears to live up to those claims.

the plaque that it removes is readily apparent.  It is also somewhat stretchy so it is easy to grasp.  Just thought I’d share a great find. Take care and thank you again for your excellent research.

Flossing and Gum Recession Question

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Question:

I appreciated your video about how to get rid of gingivitis. I have serious gum loss but do not have bleeding or sensitive gums.

I do not smoke. I eat a very healthy diet and drink only water (and quite a bit of that).

I brush my teeth twice a day with a Sonicare toothbrush. I only started flossing about 4 months ago. Can this be something other than periodontal disease?

Also, the teeth that have the most gum loss are crowned and I have a lot of old fillings. Can I have mercury that is being leaked from old fillings that is causing periodontal disease? I appreciate any help you can give.

Joy

Answer:

Hi Joy,

Glad to hear that you are drinking plenty of water! That’s something I think we all need to pay more attention to.

I have a few questions for you.

1. Have you been using either hydrogen peroxide or baking soda? ( The reason I ask is that a very good dentist has told me that every time she sees a case of unexplained rapid gum recession – the patient has always been using one of these two)

2. The only way to tell for sure that you have gum disease is to get an evaluation from a periodontist or dentist – of the two I suggest going to a periodontist because they have much more knowledge and experience with gum disease than a general dentist.
Have you been under regular dental care?

3. I know that you said you have no bleeding but do your gums bleed when you get them cleaned at the dentists office? This is a classic sign of gum disease – but you need a diagnosis from a licensed dentist or periodontist to be sure. My gums did not bleed much at home at all, but they bled a lot when I had them cleaned at the dentists office.

4. Older fillings have far less mercury left in them than newer fillings. Mercury might poison the body in other ways, but I’m not so sure it would cause gum recession in and of itself. But, I wouldn’t discount the possibility.

5. The fact that you said you just started flossing 4 months ago worries me a bit. Does that mean you have gone your whole life without flossing?

Let me know the answers and I can comment further.

Joy, Thank you for asking your question.

Dental Tape is Better than Dental Floss

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Flossing is a necessity of life. It is something that can help to protect your gum health. Flossing and brushing alone aren’t likely to be enough for most people.

But regardless of which group you fall in, flossing is an essential part of daily life. If you were to get gum disease, you could lose your teeth or watch your gums recede or both. You don’t want this to happen.

It is best to develop good oral care habits as soon as possible. Yet, you might be someone who already has excellent oral hygiene habits.

Regardless, you can benefit from using dental tape instead of dental floss. Unless you are like me and you have some crowded teeth, you could probably use dental tape only. I have some crowded and tight areas, so I use both tape and regular floss. Obviously, I use the thin stuff in the tight areas.

What I discovered to be true for me, from the use of dental tape, is that it did a much better job of cleaning my teeth. In fact, there were a couple of times where I could use that tape to actually remove a stain from my teeth!

This is when I realized that dental tape was doing a better job. If you think about it, this is very logical. The dental tape is wider and thicker. It covers more surface area. It is simple physics.

I like to take the dental tape and watch what I’m doing in a mirror. I observe as I try to cover every exposed area of my teeth or at least as much as I can reach. I like to use multiple back-and-forth or up-and-down motions on my teeth.

If your gums bleed, it is almost a certain sign that you have gum disease. Your gums should neither bleed or hurt from flossing. Of course, if you push to deep they will. But, really, you shouldn’t feel pain or have any bleeding from normal flossing. If you do see some bleeding, get with your dentist to confirm the existence of gum disease.

Don’t be surprised if you have it. Many people do have some form of gum disease. Statistics vary quite a bit, but somewhere between forty and eighty percent of the population has some form of gum disease right now, depending upon whom you listen do.

You can stop gum disease from progressing further. It is hard to get lost gum tissue back. So it is best to stop it now if you show any signs of gum disease. More tools will probably be necessary than just brushing, flossing and using mouthwash.
