MSM is a wonderful supplement with a low toxicity rating that naturally occurs in the body and targets a host of issues. Some of the problems it may help with include hair, skin, nails, muscle fatigue, allergies and scar tissue trouble. I have also heard of people with cancer utilizing the supplement. Once upon a time, there was a big craze about DSMO and how it helped arthritis sufferers. It has been observed that the solvent DSMO converts to MSM when it hits the blood stream. Taking MSM may be equivalent to using DSMO but without the side effects and problems that come with utilizing an industrial grade solvent. Some of the patents I read on MSM suggest that MSM basically supplies the body with a usable form of sulfur, which can be used to repair connective tissues, aid in joint problems and potentially energize a system that pulls allergens out of our bodies. Studies have been conducted on MSM that seem to indicate that there has been a benefit to animals with joint problems. If you have significant scarring, MSM may help to reduce the visible scarring. It may help to give the skin the sulfur it needs to help in restructuring; it may also help in preventing scars. So if you have a burn or jagged cut, it might be helpful to take MSM during the healing process. The sulfur is useful in the process that is used to build skin; one theory is that if there isn’t enough sulfur available the process is modified resulting in scar tissue. Hence, if you have enough sulfur, you could avoid scarring as tissue regrows, according to that theory. Remember the craze about DSMO a few years back? It was widely used for arthritis and joint problems. DSMO is a solvent and has some potential side affects. In addition, it doesn't smell good and you have to wait for it to dry. It is an industrial grade solvent, so it is not very practical to use. Research has shown that DSMO is converted into MSM when it touches the blood stream. With MSM, you can get the benefits of DSMO without the potential side effects and problems. How does MSM work? It provides a usable form of sulfur to the body, which is beneficial in a variety of different ways. In the case of allergies, there is a protein in your body that is used for removing allergens and free radicals and "junk" from your system. If there is not enough sulfur in your body, this great system is inhibited from working in an effective manner. Give your body a usable form of sulfur and this system becomes much more effective. Safe for Consumption? MSM may be safe for consumption, but I don’t know that the FDA has officially labeled it as safe for consumption as of yet. We do know that it is found naturally in foods such as coffee, tea, milk and eggs as well as green leafy vegetables. MSM does naturally occur in the body and it is not considered toxic and may be comparable to water in its toxicity. If you are concerned about dosages of MSM, refer to the directions on the labeling and packaging that MSM comes in. I used to take 1,000 mg. two times a day, with no side affects. Quicker Recovery Time and More Energy? My experience with MSM was one of increased energy. That is, of course, a subjective experience, but it was very real to me. Another benefit to MSM is that it is supposed to make you recover faster from working out. It might do that by getting rid of the waste products inside the muscle quicker, this allows the soreness to disappear. To find out more from a truly worthy source, go to any technical library and read the patent research on MSM. There are actually several patents associated with MSM and I gained a great deal from taking the time to read them. MD's Write about MSM There is a book on MSM by Stanley Jacob, MD, and Ronald Lawrence, MD and Maertin Zucker. It is called, The Miracle of MSM the Natural Solution for Pain. Their book discusses how MSM may relieve common pain problems such as arthritis, back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, muscle pain, athletic injuries, tendonitis, Carpal tunnel syndrome, heartburn, hyperacidity, TMJ or temporomandibular joint syndrome – (pain in the jaw) and dental pain. The book goes on to discuss the effects of MSM on pollen allergies, food allergies, sinusitis and asthma. There is also information on MSM and how it may be used on Lupus, interstitial cystitis and sclerodoma. The doctors’ book also mentions how some doctors may lower the dosages of other medications through the use of MSM. He mentions that MSM seems to relieve pain in about 70% of cases that were looked at in a clinical study. Dr Jacob seems to suggest that MSM may have the ability to reduce pain and inflammation and help to return patients to normal functioning roles. I think you would be interested to know that Dr Jacob is a professor of surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. Dr Lawrence is a Neurologist, has a Phd. and is a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Dr Jacob coauthored another book on MSM with Jeremy Appleton called, MSM, the Definitive Guide. It seems that Dr. Jacob is quite enamored with the qualities he feels that MSM offers. Another Recognized Expert Writes about MSM Earl Mindell is a pretty recognizable expert on natural cures and vitamins. He wrote a very popular book about vitamins. I believe it was called, The Vitamin Bible. Dr Mindell (Ph.D. not MD.) also wrote a book on MSM and it is called, The MSM Miracle: Enhance your Health with Organic Sulfur. In his book, Mr. Mindell refers to sulfur as the underappreciated nutrient. Of course sulfur is the major part of MSM or MethylSulfonylMethane. He talks about it as nutrition for hair, skin and nails. He also discusses how MSM is NOT very likely to upset your stomach. He points out that Sulfur has an important role in tissue structure. And that it is in every cell of the body as the forth most abundant mineral in the body’s composition. What do the Patents Say? There is a US Patent for the use of MSM to reduce the effects of stomach and intestinal upset that occurs when taking too much of a pharmaceutical such as aspirin. The patent number is 4,514,421. US Patent 4,477,469 seems to indicate that MSM preperations can be used to soften skin and strengthen nails. US patent 5,569,679 seems to indicate that a solution of MSM may be used intranasally to prevent snoring. US Patent 4,914,135 indicates that MSM may be effective in treating parasitic infections US Patent 4,973,605 suggests that Methlysolfonylmethane (MSM) is effective in treating pain and nocturnal cramps and in reducing stress induced deaths in animals. US Patent 5,071,878 suggests that MSM is useful in improving and maintaining health in animals. Medlines Reports Anyone? Honestly, there are a lot of Medlines reports on MSM. These reports are done by scientific researchers. I picked at a few abstracts from around 1986. The following is some of what I found: Medlines article 87075265 indicates that cancer induced in lab animals was delayed by a solution that contained 4% MSM. Here is a portion of an abstract from an article entitled: Use of polar solvents in chemoprevention of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced colon cancer by O’Dwyer, McCabe, Sickle-Santanello, Woltering, Clausen and Martin EW. ISSN number: 0008543X : The average time to tumor onset was significantly delayed in rats receiving NMF and MSM (P = 0.0141 and 0.0398 respectively, Mantel-Haenszel test). In addition, fewer poorly differentiated tumors were noted in treatment groups. No weight loss or toxicity was observed. These findings demonstrate that the polar solvents significantly reduce the latent period to tumor onset in DMH-induced colon cancer and indicate the need to further investigate such compounds as chemopreventive agents.
