Dear Depression Sufferer,
Depression is a disorder that about 10-20 million people are diagnosed
with each year. If you suffer from depression, you are not alone!
Symptoms of depression manifest in different ways for males and females
and between cultures.
In males the symptoms of depression may include interrupted sleep patterns,
inability to function at the office, anger, irritability, substance abuse and
lashing out. Sexual function may also be impaired by depression
In females, depression is more likely to manifest in feelings of
restlessness, hopelessness, low self-esteem, helplessness and trouble making
decisions.
Interrupted sleep patterns are a symptom of depression as well, that could
include sleeping too much or too little. Weight gain or loss are with increase
or decrease of appetite respectively can also accompany depression.
Risk of depression can be higher for people with illnesses, conditions or
disorders. Thoughts of suicide and death are also symptoms. In addition to
suicidal thoughts a person may also have homicidal thoughts too.
Depression has been found to increase risk of coronary heart disease. This
makes sense for those who subscribe to the mind-body connection. The mind
can and does affect the body.
It is believed that combining medicinal treatment along with therapy produces
better results than either alone.
However, not everyone wants to use synthetic drugs and research has shown St. John's Wort has worked for treating depression.
In Europe this is common knowledge.
