There are some side effects to using this long term. In fact, your dentist will probably not want to prescribe for more than a couple of weeks at a time. Perhaps it would be good for post surgery situations.

In any case, long term use can lead to stained teeth.

Peridex is a brand name for Chlorhexidine Gluconate and you can probably get by with less expense if you go for the generic name.

You may have heard that chlorhexidine will kill bacteria and that is true. In fact, it is extremely good at it!

Yet, you may have heard that taking antibiotics for too long is not good for your gastrointestinal tract. Because you wipe out all of the good bacteria, you need to eat yogurt and replace the healthy bacterial population. The same may be true for your oral cavity.

If you eliminate all the bacteria, you have left the door wide open for the growth of a new set of bacteria. Will it be the good kind or the bad kind? That’s the question you want to answer.

In any case, these are things to discuss with your doctor or dentist. However, if you have not been prescribed chlorhexidine, then you may have just been curious about it.

There are certain Anti-Staining varieties on the European market. Don’t be fooled. I tried one and found that it quickly caused staining. We had a great conversation and I really enjoyed hearing his views on periodontal disease. I’m particularly interested in their Oral Cal Rinse.

I know that it is almost impossible to get the heavy research done that is needed on their calcium therapy – but I sure wish it were being done.

I think they may really be onto something there. I would like to hear from anyone who has achieved results from working with these two doctors so that I can post those stories here.

I want to stress that there are many valid therapies and valid findings that are out there that the mainstream never hears about. If they are right about calcium therapy it would be a great thing to be in everyone’s oral routine.

I’m using the oral cal rinse now and I do believe that it is useful. I do also have to admit that my experience is subjective. Again, having some studies done would be very useful – however, said studies are also very expensive and may never come into existence. That is no fault of the doctors who are helping people.

My feelings are that I never discount anything, just because it hasn’t been studied. Some people criticize other’s work for not being ‘proven’ or ‘studied’ but the truth of the matter is this: It hasn’t been disproved either. And if the doubter hasn’t conducted studies to disprove someone’s theories or work – what right do they have to be a doubter?

So you see, just because something hasn’t been studied does not make it false. Keep that in mind always. We cannot rely on ‘mainstream’ views. If you do, you may never be able to reach beyond the limitations of the mainstream – and if you can’t do that, you will always be limited by those restrictions in understanding and knowledge.

I like what Li, Hongzhi has to say about such matters in his book, Zhuan Falun. You should read it, it is an eye opener.

As for Doctors Manhart and Steg, they say they are getting great results and I have not reason to doubt them. If the dental community would take a look at Calcium Therapy – they might make a mainstream breakthrough that would be beneficial to patients everywhere.

Here are some natural (more or less) things you can do to help improve your gum health:

There are two aspects to such therapy.  And you need both.  You need professional treatment from a periodontist (recommended).  But you also need better home care.   Ask any competent dental professional and they will agree that what you do at home is going to be the major factor in determining if and how often you end up in the chair for expensive periodontal treatments.

However, you should be aware and understand that most of us do not have the knowledge to really know what to do at home.  Sure, everyone knows about brushing and flossing.  But let’s ‘get real’!  If they worked for the majority of people then you wouldn’t have dental organizations making statements like:  ” Up to 80% of the population is suffering from some form of gum disease”.  Most people I know do brush and floss and unfortunately most of them either have or will have some form of gum disease in their mouth.

Many people view this as an aging problem.  Wrong again!  Even a 6-year old can have gum disease issues.  The reality is that the damage accumulates over time and unfortunately, it may not come  to your attention until it is time for a costly treatment, pain and unpleasantness.

So, what other things can possibly help you?

1. Chew xylitol gum  – and not just any gum that says it has xylitol. The standard understanding is that you want more or less pure xylitol and .72 grams per piece.  Just because a gum has xylitol listed as one of the ingredients does not mean that you are going to get any benefit from it -particularly when the amount is small!

2.  Use an oral irrigator.  I like the Hydro Floss! I was able to avoid a Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) by using the Hydro Floss.

3. Use pH balanced mouthwash, such as Perio Therapy.

These are three simple things can potentially help your dental health improve and possibly allow you to escape more expensive periodontal treatments.

Of course, you should always be under the care of licensed periodontist, but even he will agree that what you do at home has the most value to you.

Most people brush and floss and if you have gum disease I’d be willing to bet you are doing both of them. However, if they were really working well for most people, then the majority of humans would not have gum disease – and they do!

This is the secret to a billion dollar industry: up to 75% of people have gum disease and most do not even know it. But I digress.

We are talking about treating gum disease at home. My first and foremost choice for a tool to use at home would be my trusty Hydro Floss. This is the tool that was primarily responsible for helping me to avoid the dreaded ‘deep cleaning’ or SRP – Scaling and Root Planing treatment.

You can also add a few drops of AktivOxigen serum as well. Or if you prefer, grape seed extract. I read from a hygienist that grape seed extract is actually part of an AAP (American Academy of Periodontology) protocol for fighting gum disease. You can check it here.

You can also try using an essential oil blend, but I would keep that separate from the Hydro Floss use. In other words, follow the directions on the bottle and use it as directed, not in the Hydro Floss as you would the Aktiv-Oxigen serum.
