We know for a fact that periodontal disease has been a problem for people all throughout history. You see, as a specialty, periodontics - the study of periodontal disease, periodontitis, et cetera - has a very long and very rich history. That history spans the whole of civilization.

There is evidence that even back in prehistoric times, our ancestors had problems with their teeth. For example, people in the early Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures had oral health problems. How do we know this? Well, for one thing, there is written evidence and skeletal remains which show the existence of periodontal disease.

In histories pertaining to ancient Chinese and Indian cultures, there exists evidence of periodontal diseases like scurvy. Within those same histories, there were actually pieces of advice pertaining to the importance of cleaning one’s teeth! The evidence piles up through history, from ancient Greek and Roman to Renaissance Europe. The diseases themselves were well described in the documents available, as well treatments and methods of prevention.

However, the first periodontist came quite a bit later - not until the early twentieth century, in fact. Now, it stands to reason that periodontists likely existed before this; they simply were not documented. They may have gone by a different title. Around about 1914, however, all available accounts seem to suggest that Dr. Grace Rogers may well have been the first practicing periodontist.

Given the long history of documented periodontal diseases and care, however, it only stands to reason that, in the equally long history of dentistry, other people must have practiced periodontology. We simply do not have the records of those possible forebears.

I’d like to share two interesting stories about sinus irrigation with you. The first story is mine and the second is that of someone I used to work with.

This short essay is based on my experiences with the HydroFloss Oral Irrigator. This is a story about how I found the HydroFloss and why I was looking for it - even though I didn’t know exactly what I was going to find when I was searching for answers.

Being completely frank, I felt like I was being sold a ‘bill of goods’. It just seemed plain silly that they would request the signing of a waiver.

Finally, we came to the part that firmed up my thought process for good. The dentist’s helper explained that she was ready to start that day and that I should replace my normal cleaning with this new procedure.

Her given rationale had to do with insurance. If I got the standard treatment, instead of the special one, insurance might not pay for the advanced procedure later. Therefore, it was perfectly logical to have this done now. I knew that for something like this, I was going to need time to consider it.

I saw or felt one of those big warning signs in my mind that indicated, “Don’t do this!” I said that I did not want the treatment. Apparently, she felt that I didn’t need to sign the waiver after all.

The entire predicament seemed very surreal to me. There had to be another way for my gums to be healthy again.

Afterward, I talked to someone who had this treatment. She did not seem very satisfied with the results.

Anyway, it sounds like her dental hygiene troubles are fairly advanced. I’ve listed the two action items that I beleive she needs to take to get some relief. The big problem is that I do not know if she will follow through.

Knowledge without action is practically useless. You must take massive action to succeed in any endeavor that you wish to take on. This is the truth about us as human beings. I hope she has what it takes to take a firm grip on the reigns of her periodontal health.
