Eye Cups, Allergies, Smoking and Bilberries

med.pic.jpg

There is this great meditation practice at
http://falundafa.org

I really nice couple came up while I was practicing the Falun Gong
exercises in the park. They started asking me questions and I suddenly realized that I had taught the girl the 5th exercises, which is a seated meditation, about a year ago.

She had been in a car accident and was in a wheelchair at that original time. The cool thing is that she said she was certain that doing that meditation speeded her recovery up in a big way.

I told her I wasn’t surprised by that as I had heard of similar amazing healing experiences from people who practice Falun Gong.

Kidney Stones

Apparently, an Italian researcher has come up with a muscle relaxing drug that helps the majority of people pass kidney stones without much pain. Check the story out here

Unfortunately, this useful procedure may not make it to the US due to the ego driven aspects of the peer review process.

Health Articles

Bilberry and Lutein for the Eyes

If you read my last entry, you probably picked up that I have been drinking Bilberry and Carrot juice. I found the Bilberry juice at Whole Foods Market. I must admit, it is pretty tasty stuff.

Bilberry and Lutein are two items that are generally considered good for the eyes according to those who believe in and follow natural or alternative health care.

You can find a Lutein and Bilberry supplement if you look around.

Eye INfections

Since we are on the subject of eye health, there has been an increase in the number of eye infections in Florida recently.

I have actually been ‘washing’ my eyes lately. You can pick up an eyewash package at any drug store. It generally consists of a sterile solution and a plastic eye cup.

Eye Cup
(This is a glass eye cup).

Did you know that back in the early part of the 1900′s used to wash their eyes? Back then, they didn’t have plastic eye cups, so they used glass ones. I’ve heard that you can still find those glass eye cups in antique stores and other such places.

Eye exercises

I have continued to do a number of eye exersices on a daily basis. I’m attempting to improve my visual acuity. This may be a long process. I’ll try to keep you posted. It is difficult to measure progress, you have to use something objective like an eye chart.

One neat effect: in the past if I tried to make ‘circles’ with my eyes, there would be pain. Now, after doing the eye exercises for a while, it is much easier to do eye circles without feeling the pain. I guess the extrinsic muscles of the eye can benefit from exercise, just like any other part of the body that has muscles in it.

Can vision really be improved? I can’t be sure, but I have heard of people who have done it. I’m going to keep at it and see what happens. When I don’t wear contacts or glasses, it is sort of difficult to interact with people because you can’t see body gestures and make eye contact as easily. Therefore, it sure would be nice to have my vision get back to 20/20 or better!

Allergies

I was just talking to a coworker and we were talking about horses which go with hey. She mentioned that she had been on a hey ride and how allergic she was to hey.

I guess I’ve been blessed in that I have no known allergies. Isn’t that great? But if I did have allergies there are two things I would look into to help me combat them.

The first is MSM or Methyl Sulfonyl Methane which you can find at almost any health food store. You can also find it here

I might also persuade myself to try the allergy herbal remedy found here.

Note, check with your physician before self treating.

Smoking is bad for you

Practically everyone knows it. I remember being in cadaver lab and seeing the lungs of someone who apparently smoked a lot while alive. The lungs were black all the way through.
The lungs of a non-smoker are closer to the color of the inside of your mouth. Seeing blackened lungs was really kind of unpleasant to say the least.

So if you smoke, you might want to rethink that portion of your life.

Bilberry Juice and Yerba Mate Lattes

Bilberry Juice and Yerba Mate Lattes

Bilberry Juice

I’ve been looking for something that has Bilberry in it ever since a book I read on improving my vision mentioned the great affect Bilberries have on the eyes.

I originally thought I would find a Bilberry tea but I couldn’t find it anywhere. And then when I was at a local health food market, one of the workers, Carl, told me that they had Bilberry juice. I bought some and tried it and it was great!

It is not a concentrate and it isn’t processed like a lot of juices. Just 100% Bilberry juice and I’m excited that I found it.

My father has been taking a Bilberry supplement and the eye doctor recently told him his eyes were in suprisingly good shape. He is over 70 now and he and my mother have stayed very healthy. I’m proud of them, especially my mom for working so hard to learn about health, herbs, supplements and a number of other subjects.

Oh, in case you were wondering, here is some additional information on eyesight improvement:

Carrot Juice

Since I’m talking about juices, I thought I would mention my experience with carrot juice. I used to have a juicer. I need to get another one, because juicing is one of the best things for you. But, it needs to be freshly made juice and you should drink the juice directly upon making it, or many of the benefits are lost.

Anyway, there have been a few occassions where I drank carrot juice and then ventured out at night. When this happened I noticed that my night vision became much sharper than normal. The effect would last a couple of hours. If you have a juicer and you have had a similar experience, leave a comment below.

Quitting Soda pop

A guy at work was recently telling me about how he wants to quit drinking soft drinks. I thought about it and mentioned that the transition might be easier if he had some really good tasting herbal tea. I happened to have some Yerba Mate Latte made by The Republic of Tea and let him try some. This stuff is good and he thought so too. My guess is that it is a lot easier to give up something like soft drinks if you have a good tasting, more natural and healthy alternative.

Another worker at the store, Anna-Marie, helped me to realize that loose leaf teas are far, far superior than the kind that come in a bag.

And in case you worry about the cost of herbal tea, the Yerba Matte Latte I mentioned makes 50-60 servings of tea. It cost me ten bucks. But compare that to 50 Cents minimum for 50 soft drinks and you can see that the tea is more cost effective.

LLLT – Low Level Laser Therapy update

Well, it is day two on my LLLT experiment. No hair regrowth so far. However, something seemingly weird has happened. It seems that my hair didn’t ‘fly away’, as it usually does in strong wind. Don’t know if that was related to the LLLT or not, but it is an interesting coincidence if not more than that.

I’m not endorsing LLLT for hairloss, I’m simply investigating it.

Remedies Blog

Remedies and Stuff has a neat little feature all the way at the bottom of the screen. You can just type in what you are looking for and hit search. It will come up with an herbal remedy that might match what you are looking for.

Anyhow, that’s it for today. If you are interested in a particular topic, just leave a comment here on this blog. I can’t promise that I will address your item, but I might!
