Some of the criticism about herbal remedies is that there
hasn’t been enough studies done to substantiate their
claims.
While this is true, it is important to examine the reason
that the studies haven’t been done. For example,
scientific research is usually done for financial benefit,
unfortunately.
there is no benefit in studying herbal remedies because
you cannot patent something that occurs in nature.
What you can patent is a synthetically made copy
of the suspected, “active ingredient”.
So you will see that unless a drug (prescription) can be
created , you won’t see the testing done on it. Because
doing the testing and getting FDA approval are expensive
and unless there is a financial reward hanging in the
balance, there is little incentive to do the research.
Does that mean natural remedies that have been around
for ages don’t work? Not necessarily. Does that mean
they will work? Not necessarily. However, there is
sometimes great subjective evidence in favor of the
herbal or natural remedy.
