I went to the periodontist and he wanted to do laser surgery. I purchased the hydrofloss along with the mouthwash and toothpaste from Dr. Katz. My gums look good and feel great. (My gums never were red or swollen and they did not bleed, that is why I was dubious about the surgery).

Of course I was not going to have the surgery because I heard from another dentist that it could cause more damage than what it is worth.

I called my perodontics office and ask if there was an alternative to sugery. They told me that if my pockets were more that 3 mm that I could not clean the pockets myself. I would need a dental hygienist to clean them every 3 months and that my pockets probably would not get any smaller but the hygienist could keep them much cleaner than I could.

They did not tell me about the hydrofloss but I heard it from a friend of mine who is a dental hygienist. That is how I learned about you.

Isn’t it strange they don’t want to tell you about using the hydrofloss?

I’m using the hydrofloss and it works great. I believe my pockets are much smaller and I am going to keep track of the sizes when I get my teeth cleaned next week.

This short essay is based on my experiences with the HydroFloss Oral Irrigator. This is a story about how I found the HydroFloss and why I was looking for it – even though I didn’t know exactly what I was going to find when I was searching for answers. What is written here is said in general.  If you have specific questions about your dental health, be sure to ask your doctor.

A few years back, my dental professional was very concerned about the state of health of my gum tissue. Her hygienist agreed that I needed some specialized attention. They were business like and stern as they explained what was needed.

They further explained that what they wanted to do was referred to as a ‘scaling and root planing’ procedure. It is also called a SRP or ‘deep cleaning’ treatment.

I didn’t like the sound of what I was hearing. It just didn’t sound like it was something that I wanted to go through.

The assistant told me that she would dig down underneath my gums with specially crafted tools that would allow her to get rid of an accumulation of tartar. She would also smooth the surfaces under there to make it harder for it to return.

That didn’t sound too pleasant to me, not even a little bit. She said that I didn’t need to worry about anything because she could use medication to make my gums go numb.

I thought, “Great, you need to make my gums numb. I wonder how much it is going to hurt when the medicine wears off?”

I was then told that If I did not accept this procedure that I should put my signature on a waiver to signify that I understood they were not responsible for what might happen to my teeth. This was another red flag for me.

Being completely frank, I felt like I was being sold a ‘bill of goods’. It just seemed plain silly that they would request the signing of a waiver.

Finally, we came to the part that firmed up my thought process for good. The dentist’s helper explained that she was ready to start that day and that I should replace my normal cleaning with this new procedure.

Her given rationale had to do with insurance. If I got the standard treatment, instead of the special one, insurance might not pay for the advanced procedure later. Therefore, it was perfectly logical to have this done now. I knew that for something like this, I was going to need time to consider it.

I saw or felt one of those big warning signs in my mind that indicated, “Don’t do this!” I said that I did not want the treatment. Apparently, she felt that I didn’t need to sign the waiver after all.

The entire predicament seemed very surreal to me. There had to be another way for my gums to be healthy again.

Afterward, I talked to someone who had this treatment. She did not seem very satisfied with the results.

Anyway, it sounds like her dental hygiene troubles are fairly advanced. I’ve listed the two action items that I beleive she needs to take to get some relief. The big problem is that I do not know if she will follow through.

Knowledge without action is practically useless. You must take massive action to succeed in any endeavor that you wish to take on. This is the truth about us as human beings. I hope she has what it takes to take a firm grip on the reigns of her periodontal health.

Now, there are other places you can find information on gum disease. But, can you find it from a guy, a non-dental professional, who has paid the price in exhaustive personal research and experimentaton and solved his own problem?

I’m not sure that you can find another book like this. This book explains gum disease in easy to understand terms in a way that dentists may not be have the time to do. (only because they are so busy seeing patients and solving dental problems)

Since gum disease is such a huge problem, this book belongs on every person’s book shelf.

Because she has fine teeth.” We can now probably add “and a healthy heart.” Recent research studies have shown a striking association between poor dental hygiene and coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease may be responsible for 20% of deaths across the world and almost 50% of deaths in developed countries. A study from Boston University School of Dental Medicine in Massachusetts, published in the March 9, 2004 issue of Circulation reported that patients with five poor oral health pathologies have a 70% probability of having coronary heart disease. Findings from the Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System, reported in the December 2005 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine also demonstrated a significant association between tooth loss and the prevalence of coronary heart disease. This large study involved 41,891 adults aged 40 to 79 years living in 22 states and in the District of Columbia. Periodontal disease in heart attack survivors was also found to cause a rise in inflammatory markers, putting them at a greater risk of future heart attacks, according to research conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The underlying cause of coronary artery disease is atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries. This is usually associated with several modifiable risk factors (e.g., smoking, systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol levels) and some non-modifiable risk factors (e.g., age, gender and family history). However, atherosclerosis is also known to follow bacterial (Chlamydia Pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori) or viral (Cytomegalovirus and Coxsackie B) infections. Recent data has confirmed that persistent dental infections also contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Such infections release several toxins which insult the delicate inner lining of the blood vessels, called the endothelium. There is also an associated immuno-inflammatory response, which causes further injury. C-reactive protein, a sensitive marker of inflammation and a predictor for future cardiovascular events, is consistently elevated in patients with chronic dental disease.

The earliest phase in gum disease, gingivitis, is an inflammation caused by the accumulation of plaque. Plaque is a soft, sticky, colorless film above the gum line. It results from the interaction of sugars and starches with bacteria normally found in the mouth. Plaque can provide shelter for over 400 species of bacteria and other microorganisms. In the early stages gingivitis may not produce any symptoms. However, as the bacteria grow and proliferate, it can cause red, puffy, swollen or tender gums that bleed during routine brushing or flossing. There may be a constant bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth. Gingivitis may be aggravated by an underlying illness or by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy or puberty. Medications such as steroids and those used for seizures, high blood pressure, and organ transplants can suppress the immune system and encourage bacterial infection in the gums.
Unchecked, the plaque of gingivitis will gradually build up between the teeth and gums, in damaged or faulty fillings, and around partial dentures, bridges, and braces. The gums may also begin to form pockets below the gumline, trapping food and more plaque, resulting in an infection or even an abscess
formation. This is called periodontitis and can only be treated by a dental professional. At this stage, pus may start oozing from between your teeth and gums. As the disease progresses, bacterial toxins eventually break down the underlying bone and connective tissue that holds the teeth in place. The ultimate outcome is tooth loss.

An unknown author once said, “You don’t have to brush your teeth—just the ones you want to keep.” Regular brushing and flossing will help prevent gingivitis and its later complications. And as the scientific data suggests, it will also protect your heart. The famous US writer, Fannie Fern said “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Perhaps we should also keep in mind that “The way to heart disease may be through a man’s mouth.”
