About Adult Acne

Imagine being completely free of acne, blackheads, whiteheads and blemishes. Is it really possible? Well, every single human body is slightly different from the next, so there is no way to absolutely guarantee that something will work.

Here is a list of resources that might be helpful in your fight against the acne and blemishes:

List of Acne Treatments and Resources

You might find many helpful resources on the above page. It is my opinion that you should never give up, success could be just around the corner.

Here is the article: About Adult Acne:

Acne is often thought of as a teenage dilemma, and while it is true that acne appears most often during the teenage years, it is arguably just as true that there are a growing number of individuals that suffer from adult acne.

Adults in their twenties, all the way up to their fifties can still experience acne flare-ups. And adult acne can have just as many negative effects on a person as teenage acne. Possibly even more so, as the stress of career and family adds to the strain of living with an unsightly skin problem.

Mental stress can be one of the major causes of acne in adults. It is not a surprise in the slightest that women are often more likely to suffer from adult acne than men, as it has been shown that women have much more stress in their day to day lifestyle, not to mention that they are prone to hormonal imbalances, especially during times such as their menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Just as in teens, hormones play an important factor in the onset and exacerbation of adult acne.

The environmental factors that surround a person, paired with the individual’s lifestyle can also play a huge role in the appearance of adult acne. An improper diet or behaviors such as smoking and drinking affect the skin’s condition and resistance to acne, as well as other diseases.

Prevention is the obvious way to go when dealing with adult acne. A proper diet, paired with plenty of water and rest is a good start. Trying to relieve stress and maintaining proper skin care and hygiene can also help to prevent acne from occurring.

But what about the pimples that you may already have? There are many treatments available for people who have adult acne.

Anti-acne medications, certain skin care products, and even laser surgery are just a few of the many treatments available for acne on the market today. Visiting a qualified doctor or dermatologist is the only way to determine how severe your acne really is and to find the proper treament available for you.

Adult Acne: A Bumpy Ride Towards Aging

Picture this; the snow-white clear skin that you have been proud of since your teen years has suddenly poofed into a wicked witch’s warty face upon reaching the age of 30! “Acne, at my age?” This is often the distressed statement of pockmarked men and women in their 30′s to 40′s afflicted with adult acne.

This problem is surely not the work of a vengeful sorcerer. Acne vulgaris is what this most common skin disorder in the United States is scientifically called. Statistics has it that 15 million people in US alone are afflicted with acne. It is an embarrassing problem among teenagers. But this condition is not only limited to those awkward years. Adult acne is also prevalent, especially among people in the age group of 25 to 40.

Acne is a disease that resulted from the accumulation of sebum, a highbrow term for oil, underneath the skin. When this happens and the desquamation (human’s way of molting) process goes wrong, the pores become clogged. Aggravation will continue and soon infection sets in. A bad bug called Propionibacterium acnes causes this infection. Overproduction of oil and mismanagement of the process of shedding cells equals bunged pores. Clogged pores plus P. acnes, the scoundrel, equals breakout. Those pesky zits are produced just as easy as that

One of the pushing forces that may cause the occurrence of acne includes the elevation of levels of testosterone among adolescents. No, it’s not Toblerone misspelled. No matter how many anecdotes you’ve heard about chocolate addiction causing zits to dominate your face, there’s really no enough scientific basis to prove this. Testosterone is a chemical produced by the body that increase sebum production and change the keratin of the hair follicles. Testosterone is an androgen. Androgen is a hormone produced in high levels among males. This is the reason behind the worse cases of acne among teenage boys more than girls.

Adult acne is called acne rosacea. It is characterized by the following: unsightly thick, red skin on the nose and cheeks, pus-filled blisters, small red bumps, and small red blood vessels seen on the skin surface. It is more commonly linked to increased levels of stress. Isn’t it interesting how the body reacts to this stimulus? NOT. When exhausted, like Gizmo getting wet, our skin could actually give birth to little monsters! Though they are not as troublesome as gremlins, they could be just as annoying as well. Seriously, pimples can be difficult to deal with, and can cause depression and anxiety in an adult the same way it can in a teen. Pressure from work and family responsibilities is thought to possibly affect the normal balance of our hormones. And hormones messed up means having to put up with bumpy complexion caused by adult acne.

Aside from stress-triggered hormonal imbalance, hot foods alcohol consumption, and smoking are also considered to exacerbate adult acne. This may help you reconsider your food preferences and habits.

Acne lesions are commonly found on the face, but they can also pop out anytime on the neck, chest, back, shoulders, scalp, and upper arms and legs. Adult acne is more persistent than teen acne. It is because adults are consistently exposed to the many factors that cause breakouts. Another hitch of adult acne is permanent scarring. It is an evidence of the inevitable reality that with the coming of age, the skin loses its erstwhile ability to repair itself. As if there’s a need to be reminded of that when your face starts to wrinkle already. Now here’s more to shriek in terror for, especially those in their mid-20′s: adult acne causes PREMATURE AGING. Isn’t that just nerve-wracking?

Enough of the endless yada’s regarding how adult acne could further destroy us. As how master Yoda puts is, educated we must be with the crusade towards clearer AND younger skin. Or at least skin that is just our age we must maintain.

At the first sight of those wicked pimples together with gray hair and wrinkles (talk about aging signs overkill), just like with teenagers, impulse dictates squeezing. But you very well know that squeezing is a big no-no. How old are you? You surely don’t need any more marks of time’s passage.

In severe cases, consulting a dermatologist would best help in dealing with adult acne. The dermatologist may prescribe an antibiotic, vitamin A derivative like Isotretinoin or other acne drug available. More women may be afflicted with adult acne than men. Pregnancy is another story if you are prescribed anti-acnes, especially Isotretinoin.

Proper skin care may not guarantee a flawless complexion. But a good skin care regimen may aid in warding off bacteria that worsen adult acne. If you love scrubbing for its squeaky-clean feel, think twice. It can render more damage to your already-blemished skin.

Another hint especially for women: use NON-COMEDOGENIC products. Non-comedogenic basically means anything that does not clog skin pores or cause acne. Do your homework and look for as many non-comedogenic versions of the skin care products you use. It’s worth it, you’ll see.

If stress is linked with adult acne, then, disengaging yourself from stressful activities might work wonders, right? A day away from work or catching up on one of your hobbies won’t hurt.

There’s this bold Jean Kerr reacting on a classical quotation.

“I’m tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That’s deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas?”

It doesn’t mean the depreciation of a pleasing personality. Such reaction only imparts a message of giving value to what boosts your self-esteem. If it’s a clear complexion along with your aging gracefully, so be it. No adult acne should put a shame on your face and get in your way of becoming more confident.

Treatment Options Available for Moderate to Severe Acne

Effective Treatment Options Available for Moderate to Severe Acne
By: Jill Dow

Suffering from even a minor acne flair up can wreck your week, but suffering from continual moderate to serious acne can ruin your self esteem. There are options that can help you if you have moderate to severe acne.
One of the most common treatments for acne is a topical cream. The primary ingredient in many acne creams is benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl Peroxide helps acne by killing acne bacteria and by reducing oil production of the skin. You’ll find benzoyl peroxide

products available in creams, gels, and cleaning pads. There are also other topical acne applications with different active ingredients. You’ll find sulfur, salicylic acid, and resorcinol products. These are all available as over the counter treatments at your local drugstore. Other more potent topical acne treatments are available by perscription. These are generally antibiotic based. They help stop acne by keeping the pores open and uninfected.

Sometimes a topical treatment alone cannot do the job and your dermatologist may recommend an oral antibiotic as well as a topical treatment.

While there is no known cure for acne, there are a number of acne treatments and treatment combinations available today to help you keep your acne under control. In some cases acne prevention and treatment will be a life-long endeavor, for others it’s a problem only during the teenage and young adult years. Regardless of the severity or duration of your acne problem a trip to the dermatologist for proper diagnosis based on your skin type and circumstances is highly recommended. Your doctor will work with you to come up with the best acne prevention plan for you.

Avoiding the Wrong Soaps for Acne and other Skin Conditions

7 Tips to Help You Avoid Buying a
Destructive Soap or Cleanser if You Have
a Skin Problem By: Michael Hrenko

Psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, and any
other skin problems are irritated very
easily by most soaps. As a former
psoriasis sufferer I would estimate I
tried at least 30 different soaps hoping
that would cure my psoriasis. I later
discovered I was wrong and my psoriasis
was only irritated from soap, but soap
was not the cause of it.

If you have any form of a skin problem
you may have feared taking a shower or
bathing because of the dry, painful
itch, and film left by using a
commercially produced bar soap. Why is
that? What causes the itch left by a bar
soap and is there any way to cope?

Here are some tips to buying a better
soap or cleanser that may not irritate
your skin:

1. Glycerin is a good moisturizer.
Glycerin is known to moisturize from the
inside out, pulling in moisture from the
outside environment. It’s typically
found in better quality, more expensive
soaps like a hand made soap or good
cleanser.

Lower grade, commercially produced soaps
usually remove the glycerin and use more
cost effective chemicals which are much
more destructive to the skin.

2. Avoid any soaps that are granular.
Granular soaps are terribly too abrasive
for the skin of acne, psoriasis, eczema,
and dermatitis sufferers. This abrasive
soap may be okay to wash motor oil off
your hands but not to scrub the acne-
prone skin on your face.

I had acne as a teen and believed I
could scrub long enough to remove dead
skin cells to let my pores “breathe”. It
took little time to discover this was
only irritating my skin. If you have
beautiful, blemish-free skin a granular
soap may not be harmful. However, gentle
is the key for anyone who has any form
of blemish or sensitive condition like
psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis.

3. Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus are
terrific for cleansing. Tea tree oil is
considered to have some of the best
natural antiseptic / antifungal
properties in the world. Eucalyptus oil
has been shown to fight infection-
causing bacteria, fungi,and viruses very
effectively.

The reason I have found tea tree oil and
eucalyptus to be so powerful in helping
my psoriasis was because both were
natural and complemented my skin. Far
too many chemicals are added into many
commercial soaps today that do their job
of cleaning but strip away the skins
natural moisturizers as well.

Although I no longer have psoriasis, I
still use a specific blend of aloe,
eucalyptus, and tea tree oil in a
concentrated cleanser. Email me at
michael@epsoriasis.net and I will tell
you what it is and where to purchase it
(I don’t personally sell it but can tell
you where to find it).

4. pH balance of you skin is critical.
Normal skin is naturally acidic with a
pH in the range of 4.2 to 5.6. Most
traditional soaps considered “mild” have
a pH of around 9.5 – 11 which is too
alkaline and may cause excessive dryness
and irritation. These soaps
traditionally remove the natural acid
protection and extract the fats from the
skin as well.

If you have eczema, psoriasis, or
dermatitis your skin may be even more
alkaline than normal in those affected
areas. Using a low-grade commercially
produced bar soap, which may be more
alkaline, could lead to infection. If
you prefer a bar soap try a hand made
soap. It will be more expensive but it
would be worth it if you saw results,
wouldn’t it?

Most cleansers may be more gentle
because they are made not to disturb
your skin’s pH level. The skin is
designed to protect itself by
maintaining a more acidic pH level. Many
commercially made soaps may rob the skin
of it’s natural acidic state, leaving it
unprotected.

5. Frequency of washing – don’t overdue
it. If you have acne you may have a
difficult time with this one. If your
skins excessively oily in your facial
area it’s could be because you are using
a poor quality soap that’s highly
alkaline. By washing too much you may be
stripping away the skins natural oil,
forcing it to produce more.

I wash my skin once a day. I often see
others recommending washing the skin up
to three times daily. Washing this much
is incredibly excessive for those of us
with sensitive skin.

6. Pure Aloe Vera – the absolute best
moisturizer. If you’ve ever had a severe
sunburn you would know not to take a
very hot shower. Don’t consider your
psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis to be
any less severe than sunburn.

If you find yourself in a situation
where you’re in terrible pain from skin
lesions this may help. Before I found my
psoriasis cure I used Fruit Of The
Earth® Aloe Vera 100% Gel. This is the
closest thing to a pure moisturizer that
you will find. While I don’t need this
anymore because my psoriasis is gone, it
helped tremendously when my psoriasis
was very painful.

7. Natural. Most commercial “soaps”
today are really detergents loaded with
chemicals that irritate the skin and
upset it’s natural balances. I only use
and recommend hand-made soaps or very
mild cleansers. The best place to find
these hand-made soaps and cleansers are
alternative medicine retailers, health
food stores and the internet.

The skin is no different than life in
that you need balance to be at peace
with yourself. You need effective
solutions that will not cause extreme
side effects. If you want to see an
example of extreme un-balance examine
chemo therapy. Many patient’s undergoing
chemo loose their hair, many get
brutally sick, etc., because the body is
not meant to go thru this type of
intense therapy.
