What Causes Acne?

First, What is Acne? – The skin’s hair follicles and oil glands get clogged with body cells, oil and bacteria. When this happens there is a reaction wherein the body sends white blood cells to fight the infection. This leads to dreaded pimples and other manifestations of acne such as small bumps that are tender to the touch, larger solidified nodules that are deep in the skin and scar forming cysts.

Let me point you to this free acne information booklet that answers questions like:

What Causes Acne? – There is no definitive item that is believed to cause acne. Generally it is believed that factors like hormones, some types of cosmetics, use of drugs such as lithium, family history, pressure from outside influence on the skin (like sports equipment) and a number of other factors contribute to acne forming. Can’t put the blame on any one thing in particular though.

In case you were wondering, dirty skin, chocolate and deep fried foods have not been proven to cause acne. But, just because something isn’t proven, doesn’t make it not true. You could say that it hasn’t been proven to be untrue either.

Here is a more in depth page with acne articles and treatment resources that you might find helpful. You’ll find quite a few articles and almost a dozen resources that may be of use to answer your questions on acne or to help you get rid of acne.

Some people have had good luck with using medications like Accutane to get rid of acne, but the side effects are often unpleasant. I read a story about one lady who experienced extreme dryness with her nasal passages and eyes. In addition, this particular medication causes birth defects, so don’t take this medication when pregnant and don’t get pregnant while taking it.

Hi Merry,

That does make sense to me. Your body is trying to rebalance itself chemically. that is how I see it.

Congrats on staying sober and keep on it!

I’m not prone to acne but I have noticed that I get acne when I’m very stressed out. Some reasons I know is hormones and your daily lifestyle. I believe in the saying that goes “you are what you eat”. That means that acne can be a cause from the food that you eat. So you should eat the right food. ;-)

@ Geraldine, I also believe that hormonal changes is a predisposing factor. Such as in adolescent stage, where puberty arises. That is why a lot of teenage people are having problems because of it, such as avoiding to go school, preventing from having a relationship to the opposite sex and sometimes, it can stopped them from making friends/social interactions.

Yes, one of the cause in acne is the food we eat, for example the pimple they said that when you eat peanuts it will cause too many pimples out. But I don’t if I believe it as they said that peanuts is an oily food.

Most of us get all sorts of acne at some point in our lifetime. I for one have had serious acne breakouts during puberty and it took a toll on me that I had to squeeze all the pimples out until sore. I have heard about the common myths about acne and one of which that i do not particularly agree with, was about being fond of eating peanuts. I thought that was preposterous because I dont even eat peanuts and science cant find a connection between eating nuts and getting acne/pimples. one thing for sure, the more dirt your skin is exposed, the more chances of getting horrible acne.

I don’t have problems with acne that much but sometimes they tend to appear on my face whenever I would stay up very late at night. I’m too intimidated on their presence that I would want to get rid of them by squeezing them but my mom told me not to since that would leave any scars on my face.

@geraldine.. yeah what we eat can cause acne problems and also our lifestyle can also cause acne problems. acne is a common problem for teens during puberty. my sister is using some microdermabrasion kits to treat her acne and i think the results are good.

Yes geraldine, some people don’t get acne it just depends on how sensitive your skin is. like mine, i usually get it on stress and getting too late to sleep. The best way to do is have some sleep and the right food specially fruits and vegetable.

I don’t breakout that much. Just an occasional zit or two when my period is close. Might be because I drink a lot of green tea, I consume about 3 cups in a day. I read it has anti-inflammatory properties so it eases painful breakouts and also it detoxifies your body so toxins are not likely to stay in your body and cause acne.

I went on the pill and found my skin was a lot clearer. One of the advantages other than the obvious!
