I had the misfortune to read another article this morning that said something like, “All that you need to do to prevent periodontal disease is to brush, floss and use mouthwash.” I cannot begin to tell you how foolish such a belief is.
Do you have any idea about how many people are suffering from gum disease and other dental problems right now? If brushing, flossing and using mouthwash were all that was needed, there would definitely not be so many people who have this problem.
If you have the unfortunate experience of spending any time in the office of a person who treats gum disease for a living, you will begin to realize just how big the professional industry of fighting gum disease really is. I used to believe that the industry existed because no one wanted to talk about or teach prevention. Now, I am beginning to think the problem is that no one is interested in implementing prevention for themselves.
Gum disease can cost a man his teeth. People spend tons of money, not just on gum disease treatments – they spend even more on regular dental care. But, the question now has to be answered – if the average person really does not care about this issue, why should I spend so much time working to help people who don’t want to be helped?
There are a number of forces that conspire to hide the facts from people, unintentionally, of course. For example. I love the story about a dentist, when confronted with a patient who has lost most of their teeth with the question, ‘Do I have gum disease?” The Dentist replies, “I don’t see any gum disease”.
Well, if you have professionals running around who aren’t sure why you lost your teeth, that is a real problem. I have a difficult time understanding such behavior. Perhaps he didn’t see any gum disease because there were no teeth left to lose?
