The Question of Mercury in Fillings

Amalgam is a term that describes the mixing of other materials with mercury. Most fillings done at dental offices are currently amalgams.

There has been much debate for well over 100 years about the safety of amalgam fillings. The debate continues today. You can find people who will argue for and against amalgams.

My (former) dentist is among the later. She even told me that she doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with using mercury for fillings. I have no way of conclusively proving her right or wrong.

However, my feeling is that it is better to err on the side of caution. I even know an MD who is bent on getting rid of ALL of her mercury fillings and having them replaced with non-mercurous material.

To give you an idea of how long mercury has been suspected and debated, I found a very interesting article dated from 1882 by an ES Talbot. You can read the article here:

http://art-bin.com/art/otalbot1882.html .

I’ve heard it said that the very year that amalgams were introduced was also the very same year that the first case of multiple sclerosis appeared. Mercury is known to be very toxic, especially to the nervous system.

I receive a message from one of my readers yesterday indicating that the FDA may one day consider revisiting their stance on amalgam fillings. For now, they take no stand at all, which is very interesting considering that the amalgams have been around for over 150 years.

Anyway, the debate rages on and no official indication has been given by the government. What do I think? I think it is better to err on the side of caution.

Do I have any amalgam fillings? Yes I do and they are all over 1 decade old. Do I think I should get rid of them? Probably.

Opinions vary, but I think it is better to be ’safe than sorry’ as the old saying goes.

I certainly won’t knowingly get any more mercury fillings. It might be a bit hard to find a dentist who does non-mercury fillings but they are out there and it is probably worth the effort to find one.

If you know of any in your area or where we can find a list, please leave a comment and let us know.

Warm Regards,

David Snape
