Answer:

Hi Eric. First of all. It is always a good idea to visit your periodontist for diagnosis, treatment and advice on your gum disease.

Having said that, I can tell you about my experience and observations with gum disease in general.

Age doesn’t matter that much with gum disease. Gum health problems have been found in children as young as 6 years old.

It usually is more noticeable in adults, however.

It is my opinion (and experience) that gum disease isn’t always resolved by brushing and flossing alone. Having said that, you STILL need to do both.

I believe they are both very important for the health of your gums.

You are 18, as you mentioned. Now is the time to get busy on this and stop your existing gum disease / gingivitis and prevent it from happening to the rest of your mouth.

Again, I legally and ethically can NOT tell you what to do or give you any advice.

However, I can tell you what has worked for me. You can take a look at the products that I have personally used to fight my own gum disease.

This includes the mouth rinse that I prefer, though Crest Pro Health is pretty good stuff too.

Since you named a particular brand of mouthwash, I don’t want to comment specifically on that part of your question. It is not the mouthwash that I use.

What caused my gums to stop bleeding was daily use of the Hydro Floss, which I still use to this day. However, there are other tools in my arsenal that I utilize as well.

You also might want to consider reading my book, What You Should Know about Gum Disease.

The reason why is that this book can help you develop an understanding about gum disease. Knowledge is power, as they say. Having this understanding can help motivate you to do what it takes to rid yourself of this thing.

Also, please don’t fall into the habit of brushing too hard. Get with your periodontist for help on all of this stuff.
