First of all, before getting started, I do recommend that you team with your periodontist when it comes to tackling this problem. However, I will also state that periodontists, dentists and other professionals often do not tell you about the major things you can do at home to solve this problem.
For example, many will not tell you about the benefits of oral irrigation. This is a big one and it can save you from expensive office treatments. I can tell you that an oral irrigator alone might do the trick, however, there are many other things that you can do in conjunction to oral irrigation that will improve your chances even more.
I do not believe that all oral irrigators are created equal. There is a particular irrigator that I hold in higher regard because of my personal experience and because of the proven science behind it.
Beyond this fantastic tool, there are other tools that you will rarely hear a dentist or periodontist in the United States mention. Yet, when it comes to gum disease treatment some dental associations in other countries do indeed endorse certain products. One is called xylitol. This is a naturally occurring sugar that is very good for dental health. The reason is simple, the bad bacteria in your mouth can not stand it. It can kill them and restore your mouth pH to normal levels.
Finally, there are oxygenated mouthwashes that can also help to fight the oxygen hating, ‘bad’ bacteria. This is simply because the oxygen can destroy the bad bacteria or cause it to revert to a form of metabolism that is not as harmful to your teeth and gum tissue.
By reducing anaerobic bacterial populations utilizing these methods, you can indeed improve your chances of defeating dreaded gum disease and avoiding expensive treatments.
